Common Questions & Answers

How long has Adell Corporation been making auto door edge guards?

Adell Corporation has been manufacturing and supplying door edge guards as original equipment to the auto industry, both domestic and foreign, since our inception in 1952. We are the originator and prime developer of these products, starting with the bright stainless designs of the fifties and sixties, that have evolved over the years into today’s totally encapsulated body-color matched designs, produced entirely in our modern 165,000 Sq. Ft. manufacturing facility located in Sunnyvale, Texas – a suburb of Dallas.

How are door edge guards constructed?

Since our beginning, Adell Corporation has worked with most major auto manufacturers to perfect the design and construction of our door edge guards. Every design is constructed on a rigid base of bright rustproof stainless steel, lined along their entire inside surface with a securely bonded layer of non-metallic, material, preventing any metal-to-metal contact with the vehicle door. Depending on the design chosen, some models are left with the bright stainless steel base showing on their exterior, others are covered on their exterior with an also-rigidly-bonded non-metallic matt black material, and still others are covered with a special paintable non-metallic material, then topped-off with a high grade automotive paint to exactly match the vehicle’s factory finish. No rustable materials are use in the construction of Adell Corporation’s door edge guards.

What is the difference between a door edge guard and body side molding?

The door edge guard is a add-on to protect the vertical edge of the door against dings and deformation when the door is opened. A body side molding is the horizontal part on the door that is installed by the car manufacturer, as protection against dings on the side of the door by other car doors opening into door and errant shopping carts, etc. Please see the illustration to the right for an example.

Will I have to drill holes or use adhesive to keep the guards in place?

No. No screws, clamps or adhesive is required to hold the door edge guards in place. They are engineered to be completely self-retaining. When properly installed according to the installation instructions provided, they will remain in place for the life of the vehicle with no need of further adjustment.

Will the Door Edge Guard cover the entire side of the door?

No, it only covers the area from about the handle of the door to the bottom, that is the area most susceptible for damage.

How will I know which piece goes on what door, and where?

We recommend you identify all of the pieces in your kit before you start installing any of them, by holding each piece up to, and comparing them with, the trailing edge of the vehicle door. Front doors can be one piece for vehicles without body side moldings, or two-piece for vehicles with body side moldings. The longer of the two pieces will go above the body side molding, and the shorter one, below. The rear door guards will always be one-piece. If your vehicle has fender flares or body side cladding, a shorter door edge guards will be provided, that goes above these. Again, you should start by comparing the pieces to the car’s doors, through a-process-of-elimination. If you still have a problem, call the tool-free number at the end of these FAQs.

Will removing the sealant cause any problem(s) like rust, paint pealing, etc?

No, if the door edge guards are installed according to the installation instructions, using the sealant-removal tool provided and applying the proper touch-up paint, etc., there will be no rust, no paint peeling, etc. Tens-of-thousands of new vehicles are purchased annually with door edge guards installed in this same manner with no problems reported.

My car has a body side molding. Can I still install door edge guards?

Yes, since the gap from the end of the front door body side molding to the edge of the door is usually not wide enough to permit the installation of a single-piece door edge guard, we provide two-piece front door edge guards. Should you determine that there is sufficient room to install full-length guards, call us at the toll-free number, as frequently but not always, we can provide a one-piece front door section when it will work with your application.

How long does it take to install the door edge guards?

We recommend you read the installation instructions all the way through once before starting the installation, as this will save you time in the long run, as well as assuring a professional job. You should be able to finish the job in about 30 minutes or less. We allow auto companies 12 minutes for experienced installers.

Will frequent washing or polishing damage the guard’s surface?

No. Adell Corporation’s door edge guards were developed as original equipment for many domestic and foreign automobiles. As such they were submitted to many strenuous chemical and detergent testing, as well as impact, heat, cold, sunlight, and other environmental-related exposures. Just give them the same care as you do your vehicle, including washing and polishing, and they should last as long as you have the vehicle.

If I install door edge guards on my new car, will it affect the car’s warranty in any way?

No, your new car warranty will not be affected by the installation of door edge guards. In addition, door edge guards come with their own separate warranty, whether installed on a new or previously driven vehicle (see our 100% Guarantee).

Is there a phone number where I can get help if I have trouble installing my door edge guards?

Yes, we encourage all purchasers of our door edge guards to call our toll-free number, 800-466-4242, with any questions about the installation, warranty or care of our door edge guards.
